What do you remember of your childhood home?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for February 21, 2008:
We lived in a flat in the Inner Sunset district in San Francisco. We had the second story flat - 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, big kitchen and dining/living rooms. I shared a bedroom with my older brother.
One summer, we discovered a wasp's nest outside the window. It was a pretty amazing thing to watch. I don't remember much about it other than "ooh cool," and also a little bit of "EEK!"
I remember that there was a terraced backyard, with two teirs, and the higher one was furthest from the house. That was ours. There was a wooden staircase connecting the bottom teir to the top, and the top teir to our flat. At some point, the wood had rotted away so much that we were no longer able to cross it (truly a shame, since there were blackberries on the other side!). At this time, our landlady and landlord had gotten a divorce. The -lord, who would fix things or get them fixed, was the one to move out. We told the -lady that it needed fixing. She refused to call a contractor, claiming that the lord Jesus would fix it if we prayed hard enough. I think we must not have prayed hard enough, or maybe Jesus just wanted her to fend for herself for a while, because it was never repaired up to the time we moved out.
